Background

Nexus Con is a pop culture convention held in Coffs Harbour on the NSW Mid North Coast. The city is a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors every year due to its beautiful scenery, great beaches and relaxed atmosphere.

Nexus Con is a project of Mid Coast Communities whose vision is to “support people to thrive and create communities where everyone belongs”.
Formerly known as ‘Level UP!’ Nexus Con was originally conceived by a young person who wanted an event to bring together other young people who were

interested in pop culture and its associated genres. The first Con was held in May 2015 with the support of Mid Coast Communities and other organisations such as headspace Coffs Harbour, sponsors and a group of committed volunteers (mostly young people). It was a resounding success; the response from the community was overwhelming with over 700 attendees participating on the day and growing to 1200 last year.

Now in its fifth year, we hope to entertain a crowd in excess of 2000 attendees.

Despite our growth, we wish to continue to capture the friendly, enthusiastic atmosphere associated with anime and comic conventions back in the early 2000's and ensure a fun, affordable and inclusive day for all.

We thank you for your interest and hope you will join us.

Previous Attendance Rate & Core Market:

  • 2015: 700 attendees
  • 2016: 800 attendees
  • 2017: 1200 attendees
  • 2018: 1500 attendees

Most of our attendees are from the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers regions. Last year we saw more interstate visitors, including people from Brisbane and Melbourne. Our core market is comprised of mainly teenagers and young adults, although we do also attract many families with children.

Our Venue:

We have moved Nexus Con to a new and exciting location. The Con will be taking place at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus.

Activities

Nexus Con offers a wide range of activities to attendees including:

Special Guests and Guest Panels:

Our special guests, including national and international Cosplayers and authors get involved with the Con in a number of ways including: competing, judging, being available for photos, holding panels, sitting on Q&A sessions and running workshops. These allow attendees to get involved and gain a working understanding of how to get involved in hobbies or professions such as cosplaying, online content creation and writing.

Cosplay Competition:

Cosplay has become a huge hit worldwide, with people dressing up as their favourite anime, comic book, or video game characters. Cosplay competitions are a popular part of many conventions and allow cosplayers to compete with one another whilst having fun and showing off their skills.

Get Involved

Panels & Workshops:

Other than panels run by our guests, Nexus Con is also looking for people who would like to host their own panels. These can be on any subject and don’t have to be done in a panel format. If you want to run a game show, we are all for it! Want to put on a Japanese fashion catwalk? Sure!

Video Game & TCG Competitions:

In 2016, we had a successful retro gaming corner full of fun challenges.  Attendees could face-off against one of the nation’s top ‘Super Smash Brothers’ players. We hope to expand on our range of gaming competitions, especially for video games – so if you’re interested in holding one we’d love to hear from you.

Demonstrations & Performances:

In previous years, we have had swordsmithing and Quidditch demonstrations, but for this year we want more!

Are you part of an idol group and would like to put on a performance? Or a martial arts studio looking to show off? Great!

Outdoor Events:

We will have room for heaps of events – LARPing, food stalls, Quidditch, Archery, marquees, whatever you can think of! In the past, we have featured a zombie-themed obstacle course and laser tag.
